Fall is in full swing over here in my world – as in I’m stocking up on more blanket scarves than necessary, digging out all my cozy cardigans, and even planning a trip to the pumpkin patch. There’s no doubt about it that October is the start of the holiday season with Halloween being right around the corner. Two weeks ago, I got to attend my first Halloween party of the season hosted by the amazing PR guru, Sydney of Gossip & Glamour, and the lovely Katherine, Seattle Goodwill’s communication manager. Other local Seattle bloggers and I got together to see four incredibly creative ways to repurpose everything from household items to old costumes to make new, trendy looks. Here are some photos from the event!
How cute are the Hotel Transylvania cake pops? They were so good!
I would much rather be a princess than a villain, but I have to admit that Maleficent is a crazy fun villain to be. From the horns to the insane cheekbones, Maleficent is the fiercest gal around in Disney villain land. The smokey eye, red lip, and use of white paint and black powder to sculpt the face make for a dramatic, but rather easy makeup look to recreate. This would be a great look to incorporate fake lashes into. These Urban Decay ones are the perfect dramatic look – but don’t worry, Goodwill carries false lashes for just a few dollars if you’re on a budget!
Since Mockingjay Part 2 is coming out in just a few weeks, this Katniss costume is a super easy look that you can create with things you probably have in your closet! PNW girls, especially you. You’ve already got the outerwear, might have a pair of snow pants, and totally have a pair of boots that would work. (These combat boots are perfect and you can get some sizes for just around $20!) The braid wig is fantastic but if you’re not feelin’ the wig, just do your own braid! The makeup is easy here because you don’t even have to wear any – but a nice strong brow would be a good touch.
I know very few things about Star Wars and one of them is that Princess Leia wore her hair in these iconic buns. While you might not have moon boots lying around, you probably have pants, a white top, and a white sheet or tablecloth to fasten into a cape. Goodwill has tons of odds and ends for accessories that could easily pair with this costume that will keep it very low budget!
My personal favorite of the night is this Kim Kardashian costume because I love me some reality television. The drama never stops with this family, that’s for sure. You can totally recreate this look with a lot of what’s in your closet as well. Kim likes to make a statement by wearing all of one color so whether you want to wear all black or nude, make sure you put a pillow over your stomach, wear a push-up bra, and use a heavy hand with that contour. (I got curious and found on Google that Kimmy’s makeup artist uses this on her cheeks.)
For all the lazy gals out there who just want to buy a costume and be done with it, Goodwill also sells full costumes! If you’re not into DIY projects, you can find great costumes here for a much better price than costume stores. Plus, you are supporting wonderful programs that Goodwill has that help people get back on their feet and develop themselves. This costume is a classic Snow White costume but a really fun, easy way to make a store bought costume extra creative is to zombie-fy it! Use lots of white face paint/powder, black powder, fake blood, and easy tattoo scars. Too simple. (You guessed it, you can buy all of these things at Goodwill!)
Feeling inspired yet? I know I did after the event! If you’ve been reading my blog, you know I love to thrift and Goodwill is absolutely one of my favorite places to do so. I have found so many treasures, like this $2 dress I styled in this recent post. There are so many exciting giveaways going on over at Goodwill’s Facebook page from October 19-30. Each day, 2 prizes will be given away and trust me, they are GOOD prizes. Check out the list here. The annual costume contest runs until November 2nd and the grand prizes are pretty sweet – one of them may or may not be Seahawks tickets!
Seattle Goodwill is also spreading the wealth here and letting me give away a $25 gift card so you can pick out your own Halloween goodies or whatever your heart desires! Head over to my Instagram to enter :) I’ll pick a winner Sunday evening!
Happy costume hunting!
